We don’t often report on restaurants outside of the area but Chez Nous is an exception. Sitting just over the border in Sale on Marsland Rd, (just down from the Little B), this stylish eaterie is run by Head Chef and Patron Ian Carr who has lived in Altrincham his whole life. H&A caught up with Ian on a busy Saturday afternoon and report back below.
Chez Nous has been a popular local haunt for nearly 35 years but was taken over by Carr and his partners in December 2015. They closed it completely just after Christmas for a total refurbishment which meant taking out walls to completely upgrade to the light, airy and contemporary space it is today.
“We spent a considerable amount of money upgrading the whole building. We moved the kitchen upstairs to create a larger, stylish and elegant eating area which provides for over 60 people at any one time. ” Ian told H&A Life.
Ian went to catering college in Altrincham before working in a number of local establishments including The Alderley Edge Hotel, Danilos and Herb and Spice in Bowdon. He is fulfilling a lifelong ambition to take the helm at a high class restaurant in his local area.
The local man brings his experience of travelling the globe including time spent in Europe, Asia, and Australia where he had his own successful catering company.
“I want to bring my knowledge and experience gained from travelling to produce the best food I possibly can. I listen to what people are saying about the menu and always try and accomodate their tastes, bringing good honest food made from the best locally sourced seasonal produce”
Ian is supported by Sous Chef Andrew Tierney who brings his own 13 years experience to Chez Nous. Andrew has cooked at The Rose and Crown and Belle Epoque in Knutsford and Mobberley’s Wrenbury Hall. he loves cooking fish and his favourite cuisine is French!
The restaurant has just started opening on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and we dined there on a Saturday at around 3pm. There is a slick, stylish feeling about the place. You can see that there have been no compromises on the quality of the fittings. Everything has a light, modern feel to it from the studded booths down the right hand side, the ‘library’ wallpaper and low chandeliers right down to the elegant mood lighting in the ceiling which is echoed by the table lights. Even the cutlery has a great feel to it making this restaurant as much about the ambience and aesthetic as the food being served.
We wanted something quick as we were on our way out shopping so I chose the Kashmiri Chicken and my wife the Traditional Fish & Chips. I honestly wan’t expecting a bistro to serve a decent curry but I was hungry and had one or two wines last night!, so for me it was an obvious choice. I ordered it with rice and an obligatory portion of chips! The dish was thick and tasty and was served with a pot of fresh mango chutney. My wife’s fish and chips looked great, crispy and with fresh tartar sauce and lemon.
The whole meal was reasonably priced and the staff delightful so we will definitely be going back there! There is a really nice atmosphere at this restaurant, maybe it’s the cool lighting or the comfortable seating but you just feel very settled there. There’s no rush, no shouting from the kitchen or stress and you can feel that the staff really do enjoy working there. It says a lot about the new owners – the Alty lad done good!
