The King George Hale – James Dodd Interview

The King George sits on Moss Lane near the football ground in Hale and has had a long and varied history. Back in the 70s it was known as The Moss and has long been a venue for visiting football fans from across the North West. Large and spacious it offers a welcoming atmosphere in an area that is otherwise un-catered for.

There is the famous Pub Quiz hosted by Pete Smith which takes place on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 9pm. Pete is a DJ and used to work at Rafters so he knows how to react to the banter! The pub is also known for its screenings of all the major football games with its TVs inside and out.

James Dodd has recently taken over as Manager and has overseen the recent refurbishments that you can see in the photographs. Hale and Altrincham Life asked James and Chef John about this exciting new chapter for the pub.

H&A – Tell us a little about the new look and what we can expect

James:

“We have been in the food and drinks industry for some time now and this new look gives us the perfect platform to carry the success we have had in the past three years at The King George”

Will you still be doing food?

“We have added more covers for dining with an introductory offer on our menu of up to 50% off and children’s £1 meals are still available.  We have provided a brilliant space to come and enjoy drinks and food with friends and family”

Being so close to the Football ground you have always been known as a footie pub!

“Sport will still be a big part of our ethos so we have added more screens so you’ll never miss any action at The King George”

The George is a JW Lees Pub – tell us a little about what’s on offer

“Cask ales are an integral part of The King George and are now the central to the bar, with more ales added Britain has been taken over by a gin storm so have selected some of our favourite gins taking our collection up to 12

Once food is eaten and the drinks are flowing, we love nothing more than a dance at The King George and what better way to do so than listening to live acts every Saturday night!  With our new layout allowing a great view of our artists all over the pub.

We are pleased to announce we have a new Chef team with vast experience taking us forward lead by John.

Our motto hasn’t changed! Real Ales, Real Food, Real Friendly.”

H&A: Hi John, Tell us all about yourself and your plans for the food

“I have been a chef since 1996 in all types of places such as pubs, hotels, restaurants, and banqueting functions. My background is gastro bistro pub food with a modern twist. I am very passionate at what I do and love to create and try new things and new dishes. I love to make bread and great desserts! I like using fresh produce and local sourcing to create great dishes.

Staff training is really important and pushing my team to be as good as they can be then so they can push themselves to progress more.

I used to work at The King George in 2006 and moved on to open more pubs and now I’m back to help it go back to basics as food should be. Great knowledge combined with great experience.

We have an amazing team, new food, and this great new refurbishment so it’s really a fresh start for the business.”

H&A: James, will you be celebrating the new opening?

“We have our opening party this Saturday with a live band. Then the live entertainment every Saturday starts in September”

H&A wish James and the team all the best success for the future! we will be in shortly!
